Scratching the Bard

I've been busy working on a poster illustration for the Riverside Theater's Shakespeare Festival. The subject matter is right up my alley; woodland creatures enjoying a play with the Bard himself. Here's a bit of my process, in photos. I make a rough sketch in pencil; refine it, then transfer it to the black-inked surface of the scratchboard with white chalk. At this point, I get out my exacto-blade, make a few guidelines over the chalk lines and start "scratching" away the details. Will post the final art when I am finished.

These are lovely illustrations. I enjoyed the photos of you creating the Bard and can't wait to see how it will look when completed.
P.S., your link About Scratch Boarding doesn't work.

Thank you- Merci!- for your comment. I am looking forward to blogging and being able to share a part of creating art that usually only I see!

I like your paintings as well- stunning country where you live and you seem to capture its freshness. And watercolor is so demanding.

I need to create my scratchbaord tutorial- I've left this unlinked at the moment- thanks for reminding me. Cheers!
